Full of fun

Art, music, food and culture – they all come together every fall when the cooler weather encourages us to enjoy some of the city’s best festivals. One of the biggest, the Bayou City Arts Festival, fills the streets of downtown near City Hall with works by more than 200 artists from around the world starting Friday, October 9 through Sunday, October 11. The highly respected event features fine art, music, dance, international food and wine cafes and interactive art zones for the whole family.

While you’re downtown that weekend, leave plenty of time to check out the 19th Annual Turkish Festival at Jones Plaza on Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11. Sample authentic Turkish food and drinks while enjoying live music, folk dancers and even some belly dancing.

Get your scare on with Scream on the Green on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31 at Discovery Green. Don’t miss Young Frankenstein on Friday and the city’s biggest Halloween party the next night. That same weekend, party at the annual Puerto Rican and Cuban Festival at Hermann Square and Tranquillity Park.

Downtown HoustonBlueprint Houston is convening its Citizens Congress III on Saturday, October 3 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Blueprint Houston and the congress are ways citizens can be involved in the shape of the city as it grows and changes. On Sunday, October 4, the League of Women Voters will present Rally on the Green – an opportunity to meet candidates and hear where they stand on the issues that matter to you. The event kicks off at 2 p.m. at Discovery Green.

Free Night of Theater HoustonEnjoy a night at the theater on the house with Free Night of Theater Houston. This program offers free performances from Thursday, October 8 through Sunday, October 18 from a variety of performing arts organizations, including DiverseWorks, Houston Ballet, Theatre Under the Stars and Houston Grand Opera. Tickets can be purchased online and will be made available starting Monday, October 5. For more information, visit the Houston Arts Alliance online. 3rd Annual Houston Inline Marathon & Fun SkateRegister for the 3rd Annual Houston Inline Marathon & Fun Skate on Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1. With great events throughout the weekend, the marathon is a great opportunity for skaters of all skill levels to get together for a fun and exciting weekend of racing, casual skating and camaraderie. Saturday features a sightseeing skate throughout downtown Houston, a pre-race party, and a mini-expo. A marathon, half-marathon, and casual Fun Skate will take place Sunday morning along Allen Parkway.

Houston Solar TourLearn everything you ever wanted to know about solar energy with the Houston Solar Tour on Saturday, October 3. The event, which kicks off with a Solar Social at Discovery Green from 9-11 a.m., is a self-guided tour that features 20 residential and commercial buildings. Both Discovery Green and the George R. Brown Convention Center are included on the tour, and the Solar Social is a perfect way to get started. You can visit with Houston's renewable energy community and talk about your energy choices.

Buffalo Bayou PartnershipThis month sink your teeth into a fascinating look at the city’s bat population with the Buffalo Bayou Partnership's Bites and Bats tours on Saturday, October 10 and Friday, October 16. The 1 ½-hour pontoon boat tour is $50 and includes a pre-board reception, tasty bites and plenty of bat lore. An American masterpiece

Our TownThe Alley Theatre presents one of the classics of the stage starting Friday, October 2 through Sunday, November 1. Thornton Wilder’s Our Town follows the courtship and marriage of two young people and in doing so, reveals life, love and death in a small New England town at the start of the 20th century.

Classical exploration

Juilliard String QuartetDa Camera kicks off a season-long exploration of Romanticism with the renowned Juilliard String Quartet on Saturday, October 3 at the Wortham Theater Center. This will be the quartet’s first appearance in Houston with their new violinist Nick Eanet.
