There’s no better place to celebrate our nation’s birth than at
Freedom over Texas with Fireworks Presented by Shell. This year’s FREE (as in no cost) Saturday, July 4 event along Buffalo Bayou salutes Houston’s military heroes and honors the 40th anniversary of the Apollo XI Lunar Landing.
The festival kicks off at 4 p.m. with outdoor activities and continues into the evening with big-name entertainment by country superstar Clay Walker. The fireworks extravaganza, the largest show of its kind, will wrap up the evening.
Throughout the day, festival goers can enjoy three stages with a variety of live music; statewide volleyball tournaments at the Bud Light Texas Volleyball Championship Court; the relaxed atmosphere of the Budweiser Beer Garden; military displays in Liberty Park and the Fiesta All American Kids Zone with its rides, games, face painting and more.
Make the weekend special by considering a stay at the Doubletree Hotel Houston Downtown or the Hyatt Regency, which is offering a special $89 a night rate for the holiday. Both hotels are within walking distance of the festival grounds. Or take advantage of Alden Houston’s So Stars & Stripes package. Don’t miss Sultans of Science: 1000 Years of Knowledge Rediscovered at the Islamic Da’wah Center, 201 Travis. The international touring exhibition is making its Texas premiere at the center and takes visitors through a celebration of scientific and technological breakthroughs made during what’s known as the Golden Age of the Islamic World. Out of the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina comes The Armadillo – a FEMA trailer that has been transformed into a mobile garden. The Armadillo makes a stop in Houston on Thursday, July 2 at Discovery Green in partnership with DiverseWorks. On a cross-country round trip from Pasadena, CA to Boston, the mobile, sustainable community garden and composting station was part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology FEMA Trailer Project.
